OAKLEY — A 25-year-old man was arrested on multiple charges in connection with an injury accident over the weekend, a city spokesperson said.
According to statements shared Sunday, police officers responded at 8:51 p.m. Saturday to a reported two-vehicle accident at Main Street and Big Break Road.
When officers arrived, they found one vehicle’s driver on the ground bleeding from her head, and a second driver walking around near his vehicle.
Officers used an extinguisher to put out a vehicle on fire, and summoned a life-flight helicopter to take her to John Muir Medical Center. She was later listed in critical but stable condition, authorities said.
A search of the man’s vehicle found a loaded Glock handgun and about 250 30-milligram oxycontin pills in a plastic bag, authorities said.
After realizing the man appeared to be under the influence of a substance, officers arrested the man on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, possession of a loaded handgun and possession of drugs for sale.
After undergoing a blood test and processing, he was released in order to free officers to respond to a separate and unrelated shooting.
A city spokeswoman said Sunday night the release was “not a common practice […] but was necessary due to the urgent and exigent circumstances,” and added that a case would be sent to the county district attorney’s office.
The accident remains under investigation, and anyone with information may call Oakley police at 925-625-8855.
