A bicyclist died Saturday evening when a car lost control on Highway 1 near the small community of San Gregorio and went into the bike lane — sending the cyclist flying down an embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The bicyclist was killed just after 6:15 p.m. while riding north on Highway 1 just before Stage Road, which is about a mile north of San Gregorio State Beach, according to David Morey, a highway patrol spokesman. The rider’s name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

A gray Nissan Altima was driving north on the highway at an “unsafe speed” when the driver lost control of the car and went into the bike lane, hitting the cyclist, according to a preliminary investigative report. The Nissan then spun into the oncoming lane, where it was hit by a blue Subaru Outback.

The drivers of both cars were hospitalized, though the extent of their injuries were not known Sunday morning.

No one was immediately cited, though the crash remains under investigation, Morey said.
