ALBANY — Firefighters were working to contain a grass fire that sent up smoke Sunday visible from western Alameda and Contra Costa towns, authorities said.
Shortly after 3:20 p.m., with El Cerrito-Kensington and Berkeley firefighters joining Albany Fire Department firefighters in a response to flames seen at Washington and Cleveland avenues.
The fire, which was initially estimated around three acres with a slow rate of spread, spurred a city-issued county alert to advise residents of Hillside and Gateview avenues and Taft street to evacuate their homes to head to the Golden Gate Fields complex, while residents of the 500 block of Pierce Street were told to shelter in place.
California Highway Patrol officers also responded, shutting down the Buchanan Street off-ramps on eastbound and westbound interstates 80 and 580.
There were no reports of injuries, and a cause was under investigation. Check back for updates.
