WATSONVILLE — In a head-on collision between two cars on Highway 129, two men were killed and seven others injured.

Shortly before 1:47 p.m. Wednesday, a driver with three passengers — two male and one female — in a 2008 Honda Ridgeline was headed east on Highway 129, west of Old Chittenden Road and just outside Watsonville. At the same time, a driver with his wife and three children in a 2016 GMC Sierra were towing a Genesis fifth-wheel toy-hauler westbound on the road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the cause of the two vehicles’ crash remained under investigation this week. Officer Alyssa Gutierrez said in a media release that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the collision.

The Honda’s driver, identified as Alex Mascarenoluque, 32, of Los Banos, sustained major injuries and was transported by ambulance to the trauma center at Natividad in Salinas, where he was later pronounced dead by medical personnel. One of his passengers, 20-year-old Nestor Emmanuel Beltran Quiroa, of Los Banos, was pronounced dead at the crash scene. The other two passengers were transported to out-of-county medical centers for treatment of major injuries, according to the CHP.

The GMC’s passengers were transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
