Today we’re talking “Avatar,” and no, we don’t mean the Last Airbender. We’re referring to James Cameron’s “Avatar.” This epic science fiction fantasy film debuted in 2009 after nearly 15 years of planning. Cameron came up with the concept in 1994 and filming was intended to begin after her wrapped up “Titanic,” however, the technology didn’t exist at the time. In 2005, Cameron began working on creating the language of the Na’vi, the indigenous tribe native to the exoplanetary moon Pandora. Cameron then began working on the screenplay in 2006 and before long, the entire project was budgeted at approximately $237 million.

“Avatar” premiered on December 10, 2009 and became the highest grossing film of all time. It earned a staggering $2.8 billion at the box office and was only unseated by 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” before taking the title once again following “Avatar’s” Chinese re-release in 2021. It was also nominated for nine Academy Awards and won three— Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.

Over ten years after the premiere of the first film, a second film is coming to theaters soon. “Avatar: The Way of Water” hits theaters on December 16, 2022. This film experience eight theatrical release delays and it was made with a budget of $250 million. A third film has concluded principal filming and is set to be released in December 2024.
