CASTRO VALLEY — A man who allegedly attacked another man with a crowbar wound up dead on Saturday after the apparent victim subdued him, authorities said.

The men, a pair of homeless Castro Valley residents, were not identified by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called at about 7:40 a.m. Saturday to the 3600 block of Castro Valley Boulevard, near several restaurants and other businesses.

The man who survived the fight was walking around and bleeding, police said. He told deputies that the other man had attacked him with a crowbar behind a nearby pharmacy.

The deputies found the other man behind the pharmacy and determined he had no pulse and was not breathing. He was declared dead after life-saving efforts.

The injured man was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies determined the man who died had attacked the other man with a crowbar, and that the victim may have used a chokehold to subdue him.

The sheriff’s office said it will conduct an autopsy on the man who died and a forensic analysis of the situation.
