BAY POINT — A 35-year-old man was arrested and charged with murdering his 70-year-old mother inside their Bay Point home, in a case that authorities say appears to be related to his mental health.

Edward Tinsley, of Bay Point, was charged with murdering Sally Tinsley on May 17, court records show. The arrest report says Sally Tinsley was killed on the day Edward Tinsley turned 35, and five days short of Sally’s 71st birthday.

Edward Tinsley is set to be arraigned on June 16, according to court records. There is also a pending motion to forcibly administer psych meds. That motion is before Judge Laurel Brady, who handles cases involving defendants with mental illness.

The charges include an enhancement for use of a weapon in Sally Tinsley’s killing. Edward Tinsley is also charged with attempting to escape the custody of Contra Costa Sheriff’s deputies that responded to the call and arrested Tinsley.

Tinsley was arrested at the family home on Azores Circle in Bay Point, around 9:30 p.m. May 17, court records show. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Sally Tinsley’s obituary describes her as a lifelong Bay Area resident and Cal State East Bay graduate and lists Edward Tinsley among her surviving relatives. The family has requested donations for Save Mount Diablo or the National Alliance on Mental Illness in lieu of flowers.

“Everyone who knew Sally knew how kind she was. Sally was full of positivity and friendliness, traits that were obvious to all after even just a single meeting with her,” her obituary says. “The family is deeply saddened by her sudden death.”
