HOLLISTER – Firefighters on Tuesday afternoon battled separate blazes in Santa Clara and San Benito counties.
The Betabel Fire was reported just before 2 p.m. near Betabel Road and Highway 101 northwest of Hollister, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection San Benito-Monterey Unit.
The blaze quickly grew to 20 acres, but crews halted its forward progress by 3 p.m., Cal Fire said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
Highway 25 was temporarily closed in both directions at Highway 156 due to the fire. Highway 156 was also closed at Buena Vista Road.
A separate fire was reported just before 1 p.m. near McCarthy Boulevard and East Tasman Drive in Milpitas. There were no immediate reports of injuries and no structures appeared to be threatened, the San Jose Fire Department said in a social media post.

In a follow-up post, the SJFD said the Milpitas Fire Department was the lead agency and that it was supporting operations with a Tier 3 response, or roughly 20 units and 70 firefighters.
A message left for a Milpitas Fire Department spokesperson was not immediately returned.
