Intense bodycam video shows the moment that a police sniper neutralizes an armed man on the run who took a baby hostage.
On Feb. 17, law enforcement was in search of Oscar Alcantara for an incident where a weapon was brandished in St. George, Utah.
Police pulled over Alcantara’s vehicle, and a woman exited the car. The woman informed police officers that Alcantara had kidnapped her baby. Alcantara sped away from police and took them on a 30-mile car chase near Beaver Dam, Arizona.
Once the vehicle was stopped, a police officer yelled to Alcantara, “Put the child down on the ground, we will not pursue you!”
Alcantara didn’t take the offer, then grabbed the infant and ran into a desert area. He then pointed the gun at the baby he had taken hostage.
A cop screamed, “Oscar stop! We don’t want to hurt you!”
Alcantara – while hiding behind vegetation – then pointed his gun at law enforcement during the hostage standoff.
A police officer is heard shouting, “The gun is pointed right at us! Gun pointed at us!”
Body camera video obtained by KUTV shows law enforcement moving in on the armed man.
A cop stressed, “We’ve only got one shot at this!”
A police sniper then fired on Alcantara – which killed the suspect while he was holding the baby.
Police rushed toward the 30-year-old suspect.
“I got child, I got child, come here baby,” an officer exclaimed.
The baby was unharmed and taken to safety.
The shooting remains under investigation, according to KUTV. The Mohave County Attorney’s Office is still reviewing the hours of video from the deadly incident and interviewing dozens of officers and witnesses.
