OAKLAND — A 16-year-old boy died and another person was injured in a shooting Thursday in an East Oakland neighborhood, authorities said.

Shortly after 6 p.m., police responded to reports of a possible shooting near the 3000 block of 64th Avenue at Camden Street in the city’s Frick neighborhood.

When officers arrived, they found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound. Soon after, a second victim was found within a block suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other victim was taken to a hospital and later listed in stable condition, authorities said.

That killing brought to 50 the number of homicides investigated by the Oakland Police Department this year, after two homicides late Monday and early Tuesday in East Oakland neighborhoods. The California Highway Patrol also has investigated four homicides on freeways within the city limits. A year ago at this time, Oakland police had investigated 57 homicides.

Other officers worked to block off traffic and control a crowd of family members and pedestrians along 64th at Camden Street and at Foothill Boulevard.

At the scene, Oakland police Chief LeRonne Armstrong decried the shooting, which he said involved a high-powered rifle.

“When you have a 16-year-old child that is gunned down in broad daylight … it is concerning, and it’s hurtful to this community. Obviously, emotions are high, the family is distraught,” Armstrong said in part. “This type of senseless violence has no business in our community.”

“If you look at the crowd that’s out there, and how hurt people are as a result of this, it is something that we as a community, you know, have to take a stance against because when kids can’t walk down the street, they’ll be victims of a barrage of gunfire, that says that we have a problem.”

Armstrong said he met with the teen’s family, adding that “we definitely know that this shooting appears to be something that we didn’t expect from all accounts. This was a young man that was a good kid.”

Investigators did not immediately share any suspect, vehicle description or direction of flight, but Armstrong said he was certain there were witnesses to the incident who he hoped would come forward.

For information leading to the arrest of a suspect, police are offering up to $15,000 in the shootings. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or Crime Stoppers of Oakland at 510-777-8572.
