SAN JOSE – One person was in custody following a fire Wednesday at a church near San Jose State University, authorities said.

Crews were called to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church at 405 South 10th St. at 2:33 p.m. for a report of a fire, said San Jose Fire Department spokesperson Erica Ray.

The fire was placed under control just before 5 p.m., the fire department said in a social media post.

Ray described the damage to the church as “significant.” No injuries were reported.

Witnesses pointed out a suspect, who was arrested in connection with the fire, Ray said.

“San Jose fire will continue to investigate the incident,” Ray said.

South 10th Street was closed between East San Fernando and East William streets as a result of the fire.
