HILLSBOROUGH – A person was hit and killed while trying to cross southbound Interstate 280 in Hillsborough on Friday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported at 4:20 p.m., near the Black Mountain Road off-ramp, said CHP Officer Art Montiel.
Montiel said the person was initially involved in a solo-vehicle crash and ended up in the center divide. The person then tried to cross the freeway and was hit by a vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, Montiel said.
Additional details were not immediately available.
Montiel urged people who are involved in similar crashes to call 911 and remain in their vehicles with their seatbelts fastened.
“Definitely never cross the freeway,” he said.
Three lanes of the highway were shut down until about 7:30 p.m., according to CHP dispatch logs.
