OAKLAND — A 60-year-old man died a day after a vehicle struck the bicycle he was riding last week near a North Oakland intersection, authorities said.

In a statement Wednesday, police said officers responded to a collision report just after 10:30 p.m. last Friday near Shattuck Avenue and 55th Street in the city’s Bushrod neighborhood.

When officers arrived, they found a bicyclist suffering from severe injuries. Paramedics and Oakland Fire Department firefighters also responded, providing care before taking him to a hospital.

The bicyclist, who was pronounced dead just after 7:40 a.m. Saturday, was identified by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau as Berkeley resident Jonathan Waters.

Police said the vehicle’s driver, identified only as an 18-year-old Alamo resident, stayed at the scene and gave a statement to investigators, who have not yet determined if alcohol or substances were collision factors.

The collision remains under investigation, and anyone with information may call Oakland police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
