ANTIOCH — A man’s body was recovered on Memorial Day from the San Joaquin River near the Antioch marina boat ramp, authorities said.

In a statement Tuesday, a Contra Costa sheriff’s spokesman said deputies with the sheriff’s marine patrol responded around 3:53 p.m. Monday to a report of a body seen floating in the river.

Soon after deputies arrived, they found and recovered the body of a man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coroner’s officials, who conducted an autopsy Tuesday, listed his cause of death as asphyxia due to drowning. The man’s identity was not available.

The sheriff’s department had issued an alert Saturday acknowledging the holiday weekend as the start of Delta boating season and advising residents and visitors to observe safe waterway practices.
