OAKLAND — A 20-year-old woman died Thursday night after she was struck by a minivan while walking on Interstate 580 in East Oakland and the vehicle driver was later arrested, the California Highway Patrol said.

The woman’s name has not yet been released.

The CHP said the woman was hit about 10:42 p.m. Thursday by a Dodge Caravan that was entering the westbound lanes of the freeway from Edwards Avenue.

Why the woman was on the freeway has not been officially determined. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said after hitting the woman the vehicle driver drove to a gas station on Seminary Avenue where the CHP was called.

The driver was subsequently arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol and drugs, the CHP said. His name was not released.

A SigAlert was issued and one lane of the freeway was closed while the CHP investigated the fatality. The alert was lifted at 1:31 a.m. Friday and the lane reopened.

The CHP investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Oakland CHP office at 510-457-2875.
