After a two-year absence because of the pandemic, the California Interscholastic Federation state track and field meet returns this weekend to Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in Clovis.

Dozens of athletes from the Bay Area News Group’s coverage area who survived league and sectional meets this month will be among those competing on the state’s premier stage in the 102nd edition of the showcase.

Los Altos distance runner Lauren Soobrian and Dublin pole vaulter Jathiyah Muhammad are BANG’s only top qualifiers.

Soobrian, a junior, ran 10:17.17 to win the 3,200 at the Central Coast Section championships. Nobody in the field of 26 that will compete Saturday night — there are no Friday trials in the 3,200 — ran faster than Soobrian in section finals.

Muhammad cleared the pole vault bar at 14 feet to finish first at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions last weekend on her home track. The mark was matched by Lexi Evans of Scripps Ranch-San Diego at the San Diego Section finals.

Independence’s Ben Kin Ho Tsang is the No. 2 qualifier in the 300 hurdles. His winning time of 37.32 at the CCS championships trails only Upland’s Delaney Crawford (37.23).

Muhammad’s brother, Khaliq, has the third-best qualifying mark in the boys pole vault (15-7). Leader Hunter O’Brien of East Roosevelt-Eastvale cleared 16-5 in the sectional round.

MORE TRACK

James Logan’s Jacob Watts will compete again in an unusual double — discus and triple jump.

He just started triple jumping about a month ago and astonishingly has the fourth-best qualifying mark this weekend (46-4).

The trials are Friday and the finals are Saturday.
