An hours-long standoff with a shotgun-wielding man suspected of threatening guests and employees of an Emeryville hotel ended early Sunday morning after officers later found him asleep on a lobby couch.

The standoff ended around 4 a.m. Sunday when a 29-year-old Richmond man was taken into custody at the Sonesta Hotel, 5555 Shellmound St., according to the Emeryville Police Department.

Authorities say the man walked into the hotel carrying a modified shotgun and began threatening hotel guests and employees, who fled for safety. Over the next two hours, Emeryville police and officers from several other nearby jurisdictions surrounded the hotel and tried communicating with the man, who appeared to pace around the hotel’s lobby, police said.

After officers lost sight of him for about a half-hour, a drone sent into the hotel from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office spotted the man asleep on a couch.

No one was injured in the incident, police said.
