OAKLAND — Oakland firefighters were battling a structure fire in the Dimond District Saturday afternoon that displaced at least four households and four businesses in a mixed-use apartment building near the Fruitvale Avenue exit off Interstate 580.

The call about the fire came in at 1:37 p.m., said fire department spokesman Michael Hunt. About 30 firefighters responded, getting the blaze under control just after 2 p.m.

The fire has displaced four of the 15 apartment units in the building on the 3200 block of Fruitvale Ave., although it wasn’t immediately clear how many people that included, Hunt said. Four of the six businesses on the first floor of the building were also affected.

The Red Cross was notified and will provide services to affected residents, but no injuries have been reported as a result of the fire.

Oakland police officers were directing traffic off the ramp and down Fruitvale Ave on Saturday afternoon.

The cause of the fire was still unknown and under investigation early Saturday evening.
