SANTA CLARA – A man was killed after he fell off his bicycle and was hit by a car Thursday in Santa Clara, police said.

Officers were called to the 1500 block of Laurelwood Road at 9:25 a.m. for a report of a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist, the Santa Clara Police Department said in a news release. They arrived to find the bicyclist suffering from significant injuries.

The bicyclist, identified by police as a 72-year-old San Jose man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity once it has been confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

An investigation revealed that the bicyclist was traveling eastbound on Laurelwood Road against oncoming traffic. Meanwhile, the driver of a 2006 Toyota Prius was “cautiously entering” the roadway from a parking lot, police said. Just prior to the collision, the bicyclist fell from his bicycle. He landed in front of the Toyota and was run over.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

Police said alcohol, drugs and distracted driving do not appear to have played a role in the collision.
