A 20-year-old Berkeley resident has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of another man at a residence, authorities said Friday.

Alameda County prosecutors released court documents alleging that Devin Carrihill fatally shot Sacory Knight, 22, on Tuesday at the residence in the 1100 block of Channing Way, then tried to stage the scene as a suicide. He also is charged with assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

He already was on probation from a prior conviction in San Joaquin County of carrying a loaded firearm on one’s person in a city, authorities said.

A woman was arrested in the case, but authorities did not charge her with any crime this week.

Police first responded to the shooting about 9:30 p.m. and found Knight unresponsive. Authorities said they initially thought Knight may have died by suicide.

That perception started to change when a hospital called police and advised them that a gunshot victim had arrived and that she’d been shot at the same residence, authorities said. That person was expected to recover.

According to court documents, four people were in the residence, including Carrihill’s grandmother. Authorities said Carrihill fought with Knight, then shot him in the head more than once, also wounding the second person with gunfire.

Carrihill next staged the crime scene to look like Knight had shot himself. He then fled to another city with the second victim, telling that person to discard their clothing, authorities said.

Police later obtained an arrest warrant, and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Carrihill at a residence in Oakland, authorities said.
