Future of Sunnyhills

The Sunnyhills Neighborhood Association is hosting a virtual presentation and discussion about the future of Sunnyhills Apartments and other HUD-subsidized housing on Saturday, May 7, at 8:30 a.m.

The owner of Sunnyhills Apartments has threatened to opt out of its HUD Section 8 contract in February 2023. Although current Sunnyhills tenants are protected by enhanced vouchers, after they leave, the 149 HUD-subsidized apartments in the complex could revert to market rate.

Bridgett Simmons from the National Housing Law Project and Sunnyhills community members will discuss what ‘s happening and what options might be available at the event, co-sponsored by SV@Home as part of Affordable Housing Month.

RSVP to info@sunnyhillsneighborhood.org by Friday, May 6, for the Zoom link.

New city attorney

The Milpitas City Council recently named Michael Mutalipassi as the new city attorney.

Mutalipassi has served as the Salinas’ assistant city attorney for close to six years. He was in charge of developing policies, resolutions and ordinances associated with land use, housing and homelessness, code enforcement, criminal enforcement and COVID-19.

Mutalipassi has served as editor of the Continuing Education of the Bar Municipal Handbook since 2018. He is a member of the California League of Cities’ Municipal Finance Committee.

Before going into the public sector, Mutalipassi had a private practice focusing on insurance defense in catastrophic cases, general civil litigation and business disputes.
