RICHMOND — A Richmond man was charged Thursday with killing a man outside of a 7-Eleven earlier this year, in a fight that perplexed authorities when they could not find an apparent connection between the suspect and victim.

Doyle Oliver, 40, was charged with voluntary manslaughter in the Jan. 27 assault that killed Richard Scott, of Richmond. Police say Oliver punched Scott during a fight and that he fell and hit his head on concrete.

Scott was hospitalized with a brain injury and died within two weeks. His death occurred in San Mateo County, where he was transferred to a hospital for surgery, authorities say.

Oliver and Scott were present at the 7-Eleven on MacDonald Avenue in Richmond on the night of Jan. 27, but exactly how they ended up in a physical confrontation is unclear. Police say it started when two others customers — neither of whom had any connection to Scott or Oliver — began arguing inside the store.

During the argument, Oliver walked up, took a swing at a customer and missed, then proceeded to confront Scott, according to Richmond police Sgt. Aaron Pomeroy.

“It’s an unfortunate incident and ultimately it did not have to come to this,” Pomeroy said. “Hopefully we bring some comfort and closure to (Scott’s) family.”

Oliver is being held on $1 million bail after being arrested on a murder warrant, but that figure will likely go down now that he’s been charged with manslaughter. He is set to be arraigned Friday in Richmond.
