Anti-discrimination grant

The city of Milpitas received a $25,000 grant from the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls to help establish a community task force to help implement the principles of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

On May 19, 2020, the Milpitas City Council passed a resolution in support of the convention. On Aug. 4, 2020, council adopted an ordinance accepting the convention’s principles.

The convention explicitly acknowledges that “extensive discrimination against women continues to exist” and emphasizes that such discrimination “violates the principles of equality of rights and respect for human dignity.”

The community task force will include a staff liaison to be appointed by the city manager, a city council liaison, a youth liaison from Milpitas High School’s Girl UP club and members with expertise in economic development, violence against women and girls and health care.
