SANTA CRUZ — A passenger in a single-vehicle car crash was killed Sunday morning after the vehicle he was riding in collided with a utility pole.

Santa Cruz Police responded to calls of a solo vehicle collision shortly after 5:45 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Cayuga and Effey streets. The vehicle carrying two men from Santa Cruz County, according to police, collided with a utility pole and trapped the two men inside. Santa Cruz Fire extricated the two men from the car.

The 38-year-old driver, according to police, was transported to Valley Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The 48-year-old passenger, police reported, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The preliminary investigation, police said, revealed that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. Traffic was impacted for approximately six hours.
