The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged a 77-year-old Colorado resident with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man in Fremont earlier this week, police said.
In addition to one count of murder, Franklin Earl Lynch was charged with numerous enhancements, including the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, Fremont police said Saturday.
According to police, officers responded to calls of a shooting in the 40000 block of Lindenwood Street about 5:15 p.m. Lynch was one of the callers and said he “would relinquish his firearm when officers arrived on scene,” according to police.
Officers took Lynch into custody at Santa Rita Jail after he surrendered his firearm.
Police said officers and medical personnel provided medical aid to the 34-year-old victim, who was pronounced dead at 5:32 p.m.
The Fremont Police Department is currently investigating the case as a homicide and detectives are still trying to determine a motive.
“While investigating this incident, it was determined that a disturbance had occurred between the involved parties and escalated into a shooting,” a police press release states.
The homicide was Fremont’s first this year.
Police said Lynch provided “a limited statement to detectives,” and officers took several witness statements.
If anyone has information regarding this investigation, the Fremont Police Department is directing people to contact Detective Jacob Blass at 510-790-6900 or via email jblass@fremont.gov.
