OAKLAND — A motorcyclist died Sunday when he crashed in East Oakland, police said.

The wreck happened at about 7:52 p.m. in the 5800 block of Bancroft Avenue. The man, who authorities said was an Alameda resident in his 40s, was not immediately identified.

According to police, the man was riding east when the motorcycle hit a raised center divider. The crash threw the man from the motorcycle, police said.

An ambulance rushed him to the hospital. He died there.

Police said they are still investigating to determine whether drugs or alcohol were factors and whether the man was speeding.

They also are asking anyone who may have seen the crash to call their traffic investigation unit at 510-777-8570.
