On September 24, 1964 “The Munsters” made its debut on NBC. Although the show only had two seasons, it spanned 70 episodes and would go on to become one of the most celebrated sitcoms in television history. “The Munsters” followed a family of monsters living at 1313 Mockingbird Lane in the fictional city of Mockingbird Heights. The family’s patriarch, Herman Munster (portrayed by Fred Gwynne) takes inspiration from Frankenstein’s Monster, but with a goofy and comedic flair. His wife, Lily Munster (portrayed by Yvonne De Carlo) is a charming vampire, as is her father Grandpa (portrayed by (Al Lewis), who is inspired by Count Dracula. Then there are the kids, Herman and Lily’s son Eddie (portrayed by Butch Patrick) who’s a werewolf and Marilyn (portrayed by Beverly Own and Pat Priest), their niece whose conventional beauty makes her the black sheep of the family.

“The Munsters” ran concurrently with another famous spooky sitcom, “The Addams Family.” However, while “The Addams” family spawned multiple popular reboots, “The Munsters” has yet to rise to the same level. There have been several “The Munsters” movies over the years, however, with the exception of 1966’s “Munster, Go Home!” the films were all made for TV.

There will be a new “The Munsters” movie coming to theaters and streaming to Peacock in 2022, which has been written and directed by Rob Zombie. The new film will likely have plenty of Zombie’s signature quirks and kooks, following in the footsteps of his earlier horror projects. The film stars Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily, Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman and Daniel Roebuck as Grandpa.
