Lee visits SCS

On a Feb. 9 tour of Sunnyvale Community Services’ (SCS) new facility, District 3 County Supervisor Otto Lee and his staff learned about the nonprofit’s assistance programs, including rent relief, food distributions, wrap-around case management and services for homeless individuals. Lee’s District 3 includes Milpitas.

SCS moved to 1160 Kern Ave. in Sunnyvale on Nov. 1. The nonprofit remained open throughout the pandemic at its former facility on Kifer Road and has distributed nearly $8 million in rental assistance since the start of the pandemic.

The nonprofit’s expansion into the much larger Kern Avenue facility was in response to the growing need for basic services in North Santa Clara County. SCS helped 10,492 local residents in 2021, a 53% increase since 2015.

SCS has raised $17 million toward the $20 million needed for the new facility.

Wildflower weekends

The Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority is offering up to four weekends in March to explore Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve during wildflower season. Coyote Ridge encompasses 1,831 acres in the Diablo Range foothills in southern Santa Clara County.

In an effort to ensure these weekends are scheduled during peak blooms, the authority is waiting to announce the dates for these weekends until wildflowers start appearing on the preserve. This announcement is expected during the first week of March, when registration will open.

Visit https://www.openspaceauthority.org/preserves/events for information about when and how to register for these special access weekends.
