School leadership award

The Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation is accepting nominations through March 15 for the Sandy Liu Community Service Leadership Award.  The award honors a community member who made major contributions to the quality of education for students in the Cupertino Union School District (CUSD) during the 2021 calendar year.

The award is named in memory of Liu, a parent leader at Blue Hills Elementary School. In 2010 Liu was instrumental in leading a collaborative effort between the community and district officials to retain 115 K-8 teachers and prevent their reshuffling. Liu also helped raise $2.5 million in 2½ months to maintained a 20:1 class size ratio in grades 1-3 district-wide.

This year’s award winner will be formally acknowledged at the CUSD Board of Education meeting on April 28, and a $1,000 grant will be allocated to a CUSD educational program of their choice.

Lehigh update set

Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian is hosting a multi-agency informational update March 2 on operations at Lehigh Southwest Cement Plant and Permanente Quarry in the Cupertino foothills.

At this annual community meeting, held virtually this year, residents can have their questions answered and hear directly from the appropriate regulatory agencies.

In the past two months, Simitian has called on county staff to compile a 10-year record of violations involving Lehigh and to pursue options for county acquisition of the site. The Board of Supervisors on Feb. 15 voted unanimously to pursue acquisition of the property, either from a willing seller or by use of eminent domain, with the aim of accelerating its closure and restoration and allowing for a more community-focused consideration of how the land should be used in the future.

The meeting is set for 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Zoom. Register at https://sccgov-org.zoom.us/webinar/register.
