We’ve all consumed honey. But how many of you know where honey REALLY comes from. Honey is made by honey bees and some other bees. It’s produced from the sugary secretions of floral nectar and other insects, such as honeydew. The bees then regurgitate the nectar and it becomes honey. That’s right, we’re talking about bee vomit. The honey is then stored in honeycomb wax structures and harvested for human consumption. The foraging of honey dates back centuries, with the earliest known depiction found in Spain’s Cuevas de la Araña (Spider Caves) and dating back at least 8,000 years.
We’ve seen bees and honey depicted prominently in film and television throughout the years. However, one of our all time favorites is 2007’s “Bee Movie.” This film was created by DreamWorks Animation and has comedian Jerry Seinfeld voicing Barry B. Benson, an animated bee who attempts to sue the human race for exploiting bees. The film was moderately successful upon its release, earning $293 million worldwide. However, in recent years it has become a cult classic and a meme legend online. The film had such a resurgence that 14 years after its release, Jerry Seinfeld made a public apology for the “uncomfortable” “sexual aspect” of the film.
