A man died late Saturday night when the sedan he was riding in crashed into a tree in East San Jose.
The man was a passenger in a 2000 Toyota sedan when the crash happened about 11:45 p.m., according to the San Jose Police Department. The car was going north on South White Road when it went off the side of the road near Castleton Drive and hit a tree, police said.
The man was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, police said. His name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
A woman driving the car was also hospitalized. Police expect to book her into the Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, as well as driving under the influence, in connection with the crash.
Thirteen other people have died this year following traffic crashes in San Jose.
Last year, 60 people died in crashes across the city, matching the city’s 2015 and 2019 totals. That total did not include a person who died in January of injuries suffered during a crash in October, because police consider that death as part of this year’s tally.
