Handy housing help
The City of Milpitas has a Development Review Handbook available for home and property owners who are considering remodeling or building their home or developing their property. The handbook provides a comprehensive, step-by-step explanation of the city’s development review process, including an overview of the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved, key planning regulations and building codes, the city’s various development fees and other relevant topics.
The handbook is a multipurpose tool because it will be also used as an internal operations manual to train new staff, provide elected and appointed officials with a detailed overview of the city’s development review process and serve as a public-facing guide to inform developers and Milpitas residents about the process.
Two additional resources–an ADU toolkit and Web-based ADU visualization tool–are also available to Milpitas homeowners. These initiatives are all part of the planning department’s work related to improving the city’s land use and zoning tools to facilitate housing production, especially of affordable units.

Growing Up Asian contest
Asian Americans for Community Involvement, or AACI, is accepting entries through March 15 for its Growing Up Asian in America art, essay and video contest.
Founded by Lance Lew of NBC Bay Area in 1995, the contest is open to K-12 students living in or attending school in the nine Bay Area counties. Ten students will be selected for a cash award and a chance to appear on NBC Bay Area.
This year’s contest theme is “A Home for You and Me.” Entries should reflect what home means to each student and how youth can help others feel at home.
