Twenty years after the release of her game-changing debut album, “Let Go,” Avril Lavigne has returned to her punk rock roots and the cover of Inked. Lavigne dishes on her upcoming studio album, which she wrote while burnt out on love after a breakup. Against the odds, in the midst of writing about heartbreak and revenge, Lavigne wound up finding love along the way.

“I had a lot of time in the pandemic so I wrote a ton of songs reflecting back on my life in love throughout the past little while,” she says. “The other thing with the record is that I really wanted to make sure it had an empowering message, that there is strength in it. I write about stuff that I go through and even though I’ve had my struggles, I like to be open about that and try to still be inspiring.”

We made history with this issue. For the first time ever, we partnered up with our sister publication “Revolver” to showcase the talents of hip-hop duo City Morgue. ZillaKami and SosMula both grew up with an eclectic love for music and when they met at a tattoo shop, City Morgue was born. Their chemistry was instantaneous and today, they’re three studio albums deep, have performed around the world and created a punk rap empire.

“I would describe it like a documentary,” SosMula says of City Morgue’s image. “We’re just showing the real shit that we live every day. If it’s not us, it’s the homies too. We don’t do too much illegal shit, but we just document our life. When you see the videos, we do that shit. That’s what we do. you see the cars, you see whatever, that’s just our life.”

Reggaeton has officially gone international, but everything goes back to Puerto Rico. And one of PR’s hottest exports, Rauw Alejandro, is leading the charge of the modern reggaeton movement. 2021 was a breakout year for Alejandro, as he released his second studio album “Vice Versa” and won a coveted Latin Grammy award for his multi-platinum single “Tattoo (Remix).” But 2022 will be another banger for Alejandro, as he’s on the precipice of dropping his highly anticipated mixtape, “Trap Cake Vol. 2.”

“That is very important to me and my feeling of security,” Alejandro says when asked why he keeps such a tight circle. “These people have been there since before the music and the fame, so they know my heart and my feelings. They push me to keep going. It’s a very special and pure thing to have and I am blessed for being able to have them on this ride with me.”

But that’s not all. NLE Choppa stopped by our New York headquarters to discuss his second studio album “Me vs. Me” with hip-hop writer Christina Lee. Choppa may still be young, but the Memphis rapper is still quite introspective about his career.

“I need to question and dig deep within my body, my own thoughts, my own soul, to see what I need to do to get things done,” Choppa says. “It’s not so much a struggle. It’s more so asking myself certain questions or holding myself accountable for certain actions.”

Malú Trevejo never imagined becoming a star when she started posting on Musical.ly as a young teenager, but in no time she started building a loyal following across, particularly on TikTok. On the verge of releasing her debut album, Trevejo stopped by the Inked office to speak with us about her experiences.

We spoke to TikTok heartthrob Vinnie Hacker about his meteoric rise to social media stardom. Plus, we asked some of NYC’s top artists to add some flair to ice-dyed hoodies, talked to some world-renowned tattoo artists and much, much more.
