In 1981, the same year NASA launched their very first space shuttle mission, Care Bears were born. Care Bears were initially created as illustrations for greeting cards by American artist Elena Kucharik. In 1983, Kucharik’s illustrations were transformed into plush teddy bears and introduced 10 original characters. This original cast of characters included Bedtime Bear, Birthday Bear, Cheer Bear, Friend Bear, Funshine Bear, Good Luck Bear, Grumpy Bear, Love-a-lot Bear, Tenderheart Bear, and Wish Bear.
Over the next several years, the Care Bears empire would continue to grow. 1985 was a monumental year for the Care Bears, as their television show launched and they got their first feature film, “The Care Bears Movie.” The television series would run until 1988, spanning three seasons, and films “Care Bears II: A New Generation” and “The Care Bears Adventure in Wonderland” premiered in 1986 and 1987.
The Care Bears have been rebooted four times thus far—earning television shows and computer-animated films in 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2019. The latest Care Bears installment to reach audiences is the television series “Care Bears: Unlock the Magic,” which has two seasons so far.
