EL CERRITO — A homeless man’s death outside the city’s public library Monday afternoon was under investigation as a homicide, authorities said.

In a statement, police said officers responded at 2:22 p.m. to the library, 6510 Stockton Avenue, for a report of a person who was not breathing.

Paramedics met officers at the library, where they found a man’s body. The man, who poilce said was experiencing homelessness and had suffered traumatic injury, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death was the city’s first homicide of the year, and there were no homicides in 2021, a police spokesman said.

The man’s identity was not available Monday evening, pending next-of-kin notification by the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office coroner’s division, who will conduct an autopsy to aid investigators’ efforts.
