Over the years, we’ve featured tons of gorgeous mermaid tattoos. Now, it’s time for the mermen to assume center stage. Sure, mermaid tattoos are far more prevalent and we still love them, but we’re all about tattoo gender equality.
Mermen are the male counterparts of mermaids, with a human torso and a fish tail from the waist down. Like mermaids, mermen are portrayed differently throughout folklore—with some described as handsome and sexy, while others are grotesque and terrifying.
One of the most prevalent mermen portrayed in literature is Triton of Greek mythology. Triton is the son of Greek god Poseidon and sea goddess Amphitrite. This character would serve as the inspiration for King Triton, Ariel’s father in 1989’s “The Little Mermaid.” In the animated film, Triton was voiced by actor Kenneth Mars and for the 2023 live action film, he’s set to be played by Javier Bardem.
Other prominent examples of mermen in popular culture include the merpeople portrayed in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” Gill-man from “Creature From the Black Lagoon” and the Fish Boy of “House of 1000 Corpses.”
