Two people were injured after a vehicle went off the road and rolled down a cliff in San Rafael.

The crash happened at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday near the Buckeye Point Picnic Area along North San Pedro Road in China Camp State Park. The driver fled, leaving two people in the vehicle, said Officer Darrel Horner of the California Highway Patrol.

A passerby who stopped to help the passengers fell down the cliff and suffered major injuries, Horner said.

Rescuers extricated the passengers, one of whom suffered minor injuries. Medics took the injured passenger and the passerby to MarinHealth Medical Center.

The CHP is investigating the crash and looking for the driver, Horner said.

Marin County sheriff’s deputies and San Rafael firefighters assisted the CHP at the crash site.
