BRENTWOOD — A man was fatally shot during a family disturbance Sunday, and a family member was detained in connection with the shooting, authorities said.
In a statement, police said officers responded to an apartment building in the 160 block of Sycamore Avenue for a report of shots fired.
When officers arrived at the building near Barbara Street, they found a 43-year-old Turlock resident outside suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite emergency life-saving efforts from paramedics and East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters who also responded, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers soon learned that a family disturbance preceded the shooting, and took a family member into custody on suspicion of being responsible for the shooting. A firearm was also recovered at the scene.
Police declined to specify the family member’s relationship to the man, but said there was no ongoing public-safety threat.
The fatal shooting is the city’s first homicide of the year. Last year’s first homicide, a fatal stabbing that followed a father-son altercation in the 800 block of Dainty Avenue, happened almost exactly a year ago day on Jan. 10, 2021.
