SAN PABLO — A 21 year-old man was killed Friday night near Giant Road and John Avenue by a driver who then fled the scene, San Pablo police officials said.

Officers found the young pedestrian at 10:12 p.m. Friday in the roadway suffering from “severe” injuries, according to a press release from the San Pablo Police Department. Police had not identified him by name as of Saturday evening.

While medical personnel responded to the scene, the man died from his injuries, police said.

With help from Richmond police, officers on Saturday morning arrested a Richmond man — 30 year-old Duglus Rodas-Reyes — as the person they believe was responsible for hitting the victim.

Witnesses and surveillance cameras had led police to suspect a 2005 Dodge Magnum vehicle was involved in the crash, and they found that vehicle on Enterprise Avenue in Richmond, where they also identified and arrested Rodas-Reyes as he was trying to leave in the car.

Police say that Rodas-Reyes admitted to being the driver who hit the man and to fleeing the scene. He was booked into Contra Costa County Jail on charges of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, which the District Attorney’s prosecutors will review next week to determine if they will file formal charges.
