SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO – Authorities were investigating a possible case of animal cruelty after the discovery of a dead puppy Thursday night at a South San Francisco park.

Around 8:20 p.m. Thursday, officers were called to Orange Memorial Park for a report of a dead dog, South San Francisco police Sgt. Mike Toscano said in a news release Friday.

Officers learned the 8-month-old puppy had escaped from its owners on the 800 block of Antoinette Lane and was later found dead near Memorial Drive, Toscano said.

The dog appeared to have been hit by an object, but it was not immediately known if it was accidental or intentional, Toscano said.

Witnesses reported seeing a Toyota 4Runner leaving the area where the puppy was found, Toscano said.
