OAKLAND — A man was shot to death in East Oakland on Thursday night, authorities said.
Shortly after 7:15 p.m., police responded to reports of ShotSpotter activity in the 2800 block of Abbey Avenue in the city’s Allendale neighborhood.
When officers arrived, they found a man in his early twenties suffering from multiple gunshot wounds outside a home. Despite emergency life-saving measures, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
His identity was not immediately available, pending notification of next of kin from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau.
Oakland police said they are treating the man’s death as a homicide, the fourth one investigated by the department in the first six days of 2022, and only a day after the city’s third early Wednesday.
Police have arrested suspects in two homicides, including the year’s first one late last Saturday. Last year, Oakland did not log its second homicide until Jan. 9.
The department investigated 134 homicides in 2021, not including five others investigated by the California Highway Patrol within city limits. The CHP is investigating Tuesday’s shooting on westbound Interstate 580 on the transition from westbound Interstate 80 within Oakland city limits that killed a 28-year-old Alameda County Sheriff’s Office recruit.
