SANTA CRUZ — A local family was left reeling after discovering that a man had allegedly broken into its home late one night this week and began noisily vandalizing the property.
Shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Santa Cruz police were called to an active home-invasion burglary not far from the Santa Cruz County Emeline Street complex.

Responding Santa Cruz police officers, with the help of a K9 unit, located alleged burglar Alexander Wright, 32, of Redondo Beach, inside the home. Wright was bitten by the K9 during his apprehension, according to police.
According to a Santa Cruz Police Department post to Facebook listing recommended responses to break-ins, “the home residents did all of these right things when they heard someone breaking in.” The department suggested that others faced with a similar situation also quickly and quietly verify the intruder’s presence, stay calm, call police, escape or stay put and out of sight if they cannot and keep quiet and follow police dispatch instructions.
Wright is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Santa Cruz County Superior Court on charges filed Thursday for felony burglary and vandalism, plus misdemeanor resisting arrest. As of Thursday, he remained at Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
