OAKLAND — A man who police said assaulted and brandished a gun at an officer was arrested and a gun was recovered Friday after the officer shot at and missed him, authorities said.
In a statement Saturday afternoon, an Oakland police spokesman said officers responded just before 4:30 p.m. Friday to the 500 block of 98th Avenue in the city’s Brookfield Village neighborhood for a report of a man who had brandished a gun at a resident.
Officers who arrived in a patrol vehicle were directed to the man, who police then said physically assaulted officers and brandished a gun at an officer.
One of the officers fired their service revolver, but did not hit the man. Despite the description of assault, police said no officers were injured.
Officers recovered a gun at the scene before taking the man into custody, but did not immediately identify him or say on what suspected charges he had been booked.
The as-yet-unidentified officer who fired their weapon will go on paid administrative leave. Police said the shooting will be investigated by the department’s homicide section and internal affairs division, as well as the city’s community police review agency.
Chief LeRonne Armstrong will give a press conference Monday on the shooting, along with other incidents Friday including the city’s 134th homicide of the year and several car-jackings, robberies and shootings, police said.
