OAKLAND — A 38-year-old man was fatally shot Friday night on a cul-de-sac next to Lake Merritt where a woman was shot to death last month and seven other people have been wounded since May, authorities said.
The fatal shooting is the 134th death being investigated as a homicide by Oakland police this year.
The man’s name was not immediately released. Police said he was an Oakland resident.
The man was found shot in the middle of the street by officers responding to reports of gunfire around 8:19 p.m. Friday on the 1400 block of Lakeshore Avenue.
He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Police have not yet determined a motive in the killing and have not made any arrests.
Prior to Friday night, eight other people had been shot on different parts of the cul de sac, including a 22-year-old woman who died Nov. 13, two days after she was shot during an attempted robbery.
Besides the 134 homicides this year investigated by Oakland police — the highest number since 148 in 2006 — the California Highway Patrol is investigating five fatal shootings on Oakland freeways. Last year Oakland police investigated 109 homicides in the city.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the Friday night killer. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
