SAN MATEO – Three women have been arrested on suspicion of stealing clothing from a store in San Mateo, police said.

The theft was reported at about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday at the Old Navy at 49 West Hillsdale Blvd., the San Mateo Police Department said in a news release. Officers were told the suspects had stolen items and driven away in a dark-colored Dodge Charger.

According to police, officers spotted a vehicle that matched the description traveling eastbound on East Hillsdale Boulevard at Saratoga Boulevard. The car continued onto southbound Highway 101, exited at Marsh Road in Menlo Park and turned east toward Bayfront Expressway.

Officers stopped the vehicle when it reached the expressway and arrested three occupants without incident. Bags filled with Old Navy clothing were found inside the car, police said.

Two of the suspects were identified as Oakland residents in their late teens; the third as an American Canyon resident in her early 20s. They were booked into San Mateo County jail on charges of second-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit crime.

The Bay Area has seen a flurry of similar retail thefts, as well as robberies and burglaries, in recent weeks. On Tuesday, authorities announced the arrests of two people and the recovery of more than $200,000 worth of stolen merchandise at a Vallejo home.
