A new poll shows that messaging from President Joe Biden and the Democrats is not resounding with Americans, a majority of who say that the country is headed in the wrong direction.
The latest NPR/Marist poll published on Thursday shows some very alarming signs for Democrats.
Among those are that 61% of Americans say the country is moving in the wrong direction.
While Democrats are trying to tout the legislative achievements that sent money into the pocketbooks of millions of Americans, most say the payments only helped them a little or not at all.
“They [Democrats] don’t have a unified message for what they’re doing, and that does not bode well for the party,” said Marist Poll director Barbara Carvalho.
More than 6 in 10 Americans reported receiving the onetime payment of $1,400 this year, but of those only a quarter said that it helped a lot.
Many more said that it only helped a little.
The same poll found that 59% of eligible households received the child tax credit, far fewer than what the government says received it. Of those, two-thirds reported that it helped a little, but another 20% said it didn’t help at all.
Carvalho saw another problem for Democrats in the poll results.
A previous poll found that a primary concern for many Americans was inflation, but the latest poll found that many Americans didn’t think the Democratic spending bill would improve inflation.
“[The Democrats ar] not connecting the dots between concern about inflation and what’s happening in Washington, either with the infrastructure bill or Build Back Better,” said Carvalho.
She said that should absolutely be a “red flag” for the Democratic party.
