Metallica is set to celebrate its 40th anniversary in grand style.
The best-selling Bay Area band of all time will host four days of concerts, curated live shows and other events in San Francisco from Dec. 16 to 19.
The two biggest events of the Metallica San Francisco Takeover calendar will happen when the multiplatinum-band headlines the Chase Center in San Francisco for two nights — Dec. 17 and 19. Both of those shows are already sold out.
Yet, those who missed on the landing tickets to the Chase gigs can still check out some of the other fun events on the docket.
The festivities begin when Metallica pals White Reaper — who appeared on the group’s recent tribute album, “Blacklist” — performs at August Hall on Dec. 16. Taipei Houston is also on the bill. Show time is 8:30 p.m. and tickets are $25, augusthallsf.com.
The next night (Dec. 17) brings the really cool tripleheader of Goodnight, Texas, Bastardane and headliner the Wedding Present, featuring Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo, to the Fillmore. Obviously, the Wedding Present will take the stage on the late side — after Hammett and Trujillo finish up playing with their other band at Chase Center that same night. Show time is 10 p.m. and tickets are $39.50, livenation.com.
There a bunch of cool shows and such on Dec. 18. One of the best bets is saxophonist Kamasi Washington (another artist who contributed to “Blacklist”) at August Hall. Show time is 9 p.m. and tickets are $55.
Other Metallica events on Dec. 18 include a film festival at the AMC Kabuki 8 and a gallery show, book signing and Q&A with photographer Ross Halfin (who recently released the “Metallica: The Black Album in Black & White” photo book) at various venues in San Francisco.
