PALO ALTO – A 26-year-old San Francisco man has been arrested in connection with a carjacking in downtown Palo Alto, police said.
The incident was reported at about 5:15 p.m. Friday at a city parking lot on the 300 block of Hamilton Avenue, the Palo Alto Police Department said in a news release Tuesday.
An investigation revealed a husband and wife in their 60s had parked their 2017 Honda Civic in the lot and noticed the suspect staring at them. The couple walked to a nearby business and left the car unlocked. Police said the wife returned to the car to lock it and found the suspect in the driver’s seat.
The victim started to scream and the suspect got out of the car and demanded the key, which was in her hand, police said. He allegedly grabbed the key, got back in the car and tried to start it.
Police said the suspect was unable to start the car and got out again as the victim’s husband returned to the scene. Officers arrived a short time later and took the suspect into custody. He was booked into Santa Clara County jail on a carjacking charge.
The victim suffered a cut to her hand when the suspect grabbed the key, but she declined medical attention, police said.
