A man was shot and killed in Oakland on Sunday afternoon after following and confronting someone he suspected had been burglarizing nearby cars, authorities said.
The shooting occurred just after 3:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Grand Avenue, near Eastshore Park. According to police, the victim had witnessed a man breaking into cars in the 3300 block of Grand Avenue, then followed the suspect south via car. He approached the suspect and was shot. The suspect then fled the scene.
The fatal shooting is the 127th death being investigated by Oakland police. Additionally, the California Highway Patrol has investigated five homicides so far on Oakland freeways. The highest number of homicides investigated by Oakland police is 131 in 2012.
