The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s division has identified a 20-year-old man fatally struck by a vehicle on Interstate 880 last week.
Nimrod Hagos, 20, died around 6:50 p.m. Nov. 14 after a pickup truck struck him in southbound I-880 lanes north of the 7th Street off-ramp in West Oakland, the California Highway Patrol said.
The truck’s driver immediately stopped and was joined by other drivers seeking to provide assistance. Neither alcohol nor drugs were deemed to be collision factors, the CHP said.
According to a family member who spoke with this news organization, Hagos had traveled from Eritrea to the Bay Area, landing at San Francisco International Airport early on Nov. 14.
After reuniting with his family, his father took him around to acquire necessary personal items, but encountered mechanical issues with a truck in a West Oakland neighborhood. The father left the truck briefly to seek help, but returned to find his son missing.
Family members who spoke with a nearby business found surveillance camera footage that showed Hagos walking toward the I-880 on-ramp around dusk. Late last week, family members reached out to the coroner’s office, which had encountered issues identifying Hagos due to an absence of records.
“After days of looking for Nimrod, the family was told that Nimrod was in an accident,” a family representative said in part in a GoFundMe fund-raising campaign page. “With the support of the community, we ask you to remember us in your prayers.”
As of 6 p.m. Monday, the campaign has raised nearly $10,800 since last Saturday toward a $30,000 meant to cover funeral arrangement costs at https://www.gofundme.com/f/funeral-support-for-nimrods-family.
